A music publisher is a company that is responsible for distributing music in the form of notes as well as lyrics or records. An agreement regarding the exploitation and usage rights between the music publisher and the creator of the music is necessary for the publisher to own the right to distribute the music. Both parties are usually members of a collecting society (in Germany GEMA) which then manages the legal issues regarding copyrights, publishing and public presentation of the music.
